Why Is the City of St Albans Named After Britain’s First Saint?
The historic city of St Albans owes its name to Saint Alban, recognized as the first Christian martyr of Britain.Records in Bede’s Ecclesiastical History of the English People describe Alban’s life in Verulamium during the 3rd or 4th century, when followers of Christianity were under intense persecution.
Alban is remembered for sheltering a Christian priest who was escaping Roman authorities. Inspired by the priest’s faith and courage, Alban embraced Christianity himself. When soldiers arrived, he disguised himself in the priest’s cloak and bravely surrendered in his place.
Choosing loyalty to his new faith over his life, Alban was sentenced to death. Legend recounts that after his execution, his severed head rolled down a hill, and a spring of water appeared where it came to rest — a miracle that further cemented his legacy.
